Prof. Surya Bhan is one of the most senior Orthopedic teacher and surgeon in India and is well known nationally and internationally for his contributions to teaching, research and excellent operating skills and human touch in patient care. He is at present Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon and Director of Orthopaedics at Primus Super Speciality Hospital, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.
Contributions in Present Position
Established Fresh Frozen Bone Bank facility at Primus hospital which allows complex orthopaedic surgeries and revision joint replacement to be done with assured chances of functional recovery.
Performing more than 1000 joint replacement surgeries annually including complex primaries and revision total joint replacements, both on international and patients from within the country
Faculty member including Head of Department of Orthopaedics of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi for 26 years
Has held additional prestigious responsible positions of Officer In charge of Emergency Services and Chief of Trauma Centre at AIIMS.
He has the honour to treat President, Vice President and four Prime Ministers of India.
During his stewardship orthopaedic department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences was repeatedly adjudged as the best in the country in surveys by national weekly publications ‘The Week’ and ‘India Today’ in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Member of steering committee of state of the art -Jayaprakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center in Delhi’, a dream project of Government of India to provide world-class facilities to trauma victims and develop correct protocols and set high standards in trauma management
Established India’s first “Bone and Tissue Allograft Bank” at AIIMS
First to introduce the then most modern techniques of AO methods of fracture fixation, arthroscopy and arthroplasty in Delhi after joining AIIMS in 1981.
Has been organizing conference on ‘Current Concepts in Arthroplasty’ at AIIMS every year and this event has become best arthroplasty meeting in India.
Established India’s first “Bone and Tissue Allograft Bank” at AIIMS with facilities for procuring, processing, storage and usage of bone allograft from both living and nonliving donors. He has performed large numbers of revision joint replacements using allografts and has the largest such series in India.
Member of the team selected by CSIR under direction from Planning Commission to develop indigenous high quality implants for orthopaedic applications.
Prof. Bhan has regularly contributed in shaping research in thrust areas as an active member of Project Review Committees on Health Sciences of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Singular distinction of Indian orthopaedic surgeon having 6 papers abstracted in Year Book Series, 2 papers abstracted in Rheumatology Digest and 54 papers published in most reputed international orthopaedic journals on clinical work and research done in India. Many of his landmark research papers have been published in Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics & Related research and Journal of Arthoplasty which are the best Orthopaedic Journals in the world. He has 155 research papers to his credit.
His research work has been referenced in prestigious textbooks like Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, Rockwood & Green’s Fracture and Joint Injuries.
Member of the editorial boards of Clinical Orthopaedics & Related Research (USA), Indian Journal of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Today.
Author of 7 books on orthopaedics and has contributed chapters on orthopaedics in many undergraduate and post graduate text books.
Valuing Dr.Bhan’s contributions to Academic Orthopaedics; University of Singapore awarded him their most prestigious ‘V.K.Pillay Memorial Lecturer ship’ in October 2004. Nomination to this award are solicited from teaching institutions worldwide.
Leading Joint Replacement Surgeon in North India having done nearly 4000 such procedures
Successfully introduced and integrated newer advances like use of allografts in revision arthroplasty, minimally invasive total hip and knee replacement, mobile and fixed bearing total knee replacement, joint replacement in ankylosed knees and hips, which has improved the outcome of these complex surgical operations. He has performed large numbers of revision joint replacements using allografts and has the largest such series in India
Treated difficult deformities with complex reconstructive surgeries in spastic children as well as in other areas of Paediatric Orthopaedics.
Has 28 years experience in teaching postgraduates and as an examiner to many medical colleges. He has served as visiting professor to medical facility of Kuwait Oil Company, Kuwait. Has been chairman of A.O. Basic and Advanced courses and Faculty at A.O. Workshop at Davos, Switzerland. He has participated as faculty in numerous workshops, conferences and CMEs both in India and abroad and has given more than 182 guest lectures.
His unit both at AIIMS and at Primus Hospital has been attracting short-term trainees, both from overseas and at national level for training in arthroplasty
